![]() People who were dancing 20/30/40 years ago still get down in social settings and sometimes move just as good if not better than the younger generation. ![]() You have to keep in mind that NYC has been dancing forever. I got you homie.Įdit: I also want to add that the community is pretty diverse in regards to experience and age. I’m pretty involved in the scene, so I can go on and on. LayerRhythm (One of my favorite and most unique events in NYC)Īlso, follow Dj’s.In regards to events, here’s a few you can check out. Those studios also hold open sessions for hip hop, breaking, house, and popping. So, one person already suggested studios like EXPG, PMT, and all that other jazz. With summer around the corner as well, be prepared for all the outdoor events. I’m talking about events where dancers from all styles flock to to get down or just have a good time. And I’m not talking about the college bars and/or clubs. Honestly, the nightlife is where you can really feel free. You my friend, are in for a treat if you’re trying to get involved in the NY dance scene. What's the appropriate way for a complete casual to get involved in the dancing world here in a NYC in a low pressure environment? I've been slow to make new friends so far so anything I start I'd probably have to start alone, and dancing in a well-lit room while sober in front of people I've never met sounds somewhat intimidating. Problem is, I don't really know anything about the dance world - if I should find private lessons, or group lessons, or join a studio (if that's different than just group lessons?), or if I'd even fit in with dancing culture, if I've missed the opportunity so to speak, etc. But I just moved to NYC three weeks ago and I thought I might try it out. I've never taken any lessons or extended this beyond a Friday/Saturday night dance floor. Back in DC I'd go out with people who would accommodate the groove but were definitely out for the social component above all. I'm okay for an amateur, but I feel like I've hit my peak unless I get training or at least a cohort of people who are as into it as me. I'm a 24yo guy and I've been really into dancing for about three years now.
